Samsung has reportedly signed a deal with the popular
electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla worth nearly half a billion dollars. As
part of the deal, the South Korean tech giant will be providing camera modules
for Tesla’s upcoming Cybertruck electric vehicle, which was introduced in 2019.
The Korea Economic Daily reported that the “number 1 American EV manufacturer”
to whom Samsung will supply cameras plans to launch a new electric vehicle that
could give drivers a rearview through a camera that will be equipped on the car
as the model does not have side mirrors. It also noted that the upcoming EV has
more than eight cameras for self-driving purposes. It is well known that the
Cybertruck is equipped with an extensive suite of cameras and sensors. The
electric pickup is equipped with cameras in the fenders that provide a view of
the cabin instead of having to depend on side mirrors. Even though the US
doesn’t allow cameras instead of side mirrors, Tesla is hoping to change that
before the launch of the Cybertruck, Korea Economic Daily reported.
“Samsung Electro-Mechanics was known to have won a $435.7
million deal to supply camera modules to the largest US EV maker. The company
plans to launch a new EV, which gives drivers a rear view through a camera
equipped on the car, as the model does not have side mirrors. The EV has more
than eight cameras for self-driving purposes”, added the report by the Korea
Economic Daily. Talking about the Cybertruck’s suite of cameras, it gets
front-facing and back-facing cameras as well as one under the front bumper. The
cameras could be used for purposes like parking assist or even a 360-degree
birds-eye view. It’s worth mentioning that Samsung has just introduced its
first ISOCELL Image Sensor tailored for automotive applications earlier today.
Dubbed the Samsung ISOCELL Auto 4AC, the new sensor could be seen in the Tesla
Cybertruck as well as in Tesla’s upcoming electric vehicles as well. The new
sensor has the brand’s CornerPixel solution, which is capable of enhancing the
field of view for an even safer driving experience. This sensor is intended to
be used as a reverse camera to stream on surround view monitors.
