Sony has been hosting Nintendo Direct-like PlayStation State
of Play events for some time now. The video presentations offer fans new looks
at upcoming PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, and always carry a great
deal of hype with them. There's usually quite a bit of time between State of
Play events, but a new rumor suggests that the next PlayStation State of Play
could be happening much sooner than expected.
GamesRadar's James Jarvis has said that there are rumors
suggesting that the next PlayStation State of Play event will take place on
Thursday, August 19. According to the rumors, Sony was believed to be
announcing the State of Play on August 10, though that obviously didn't happen.
However, just because the State of Play wasn't announced when expected doesn't
mean that August 19 isn't still the date of the next event.
As for what will be at the next PlayStation State of Play, Jarvis predicts that the event will include the official announcement of the Horizon Forbidden West delay, which was reported on by industry insiders but has yet to be confirmed by Sony, along with some fresh gameplay footage. He also believes that the event will include a new look at Kena: Bridge of Spirits, an update on Gran Turismo 7, and a "new surprise announcement." What the "surprise announcement" could be is anyone's guess, but one theory is that it could be something to do with God of War: Ragnarok, or whatever the sequel to the hit 2018 God of War game ends up being called. While God of War: Ragnarok was delayed to 2022, there once was a time when it was believed to be a 2021 release, and so one has to imagine that fans will get their first look at the game before the year is out. Of course, it could be something else entirely, and so PlayStation fans should keep their expectations in check.
Jarvis stressed in his tweet that this was all rumor and
speculation, but even so, it would make sense for Sony to host its next State
of Play event sooner rather than later. The aforementioned Horizon Forbidden
West delay announcement still needs to come, plus Kena: Bridge of Spirits could
do with another showcase prior to its launch. Not only that, but Sony's holiday
2021 slate is looking rather bare compared to the competition, so it would make
sense for the company to build some hype.
Plus, it's worth pointing out that Gamescom 2021 is taking
place this month, with an Xbox showcase scheduled as part of the festivities.
While Sony doesn't appear to be taking part in Gamescom itself, it may still
want to keep some attention on itself with a State of Play presentation. Fans
should treat these rumors with a grain of salt for now and keep their eyes
peeled for an official announcement from Sony before getting their hopes up
about a State of Play taking place in August, though.
